Watertown: February 5, 1959

Daniel was quite nice to me today, but he sure didn't go out of his way any. Tonight everybody went down and decorated. It’s absolutely beautiful! A Mardi Gras theme. But oh – are we ever tired – and excited!

Mary, Keep Your Snoopy Eyes Out!

This is the diary of Julie Neuendorf of Watertown, South Dakota. It was written in 1959 and 1960 when Julie was in high school.

Julie is my mother-in-law, and gave her permission to have it reprinted. I'm transcribing the pages of her diary onto this blog, as if she were keeping the blog back then. Some names have been changed for privacy reasons.

I love it because it's such a wonderful slice of small-town life from that era. It's about boyfriends and girlfriends, necking, parking, shoplifting, dating, high school, and other teenage shenanigans - in short, the typical day-to-day life of a Watertown teen from the late 1950s and early 1960s. If you're from that area, maybe you'll recognize some of the names and places mentioned. Just a warning - the diary ends with an unexpected tragedy that may have you needing to reach for tissues. But that part doesn't happen for awhile.

I'll post excerpts when I can, unedited (except for obvious misspellings) and unabridged. I'll occasionally insert posts about some of the things Julie mentions in her diary, or at least link to them as best I can.

As I post diary excerpt on here, I'll also add these excerpts to the Diary Only page, so that if you'd like, you can flip over to see the uninterrupted diary from beginning to end without all my extra information.
